Dennis Radar was born on March 9, 1945 in Kansas. And the first born of four boys. As a child he appeared normal and known to blend in with the crowd. He attended Riverview Elementary School, where he was an average student with withdrawn tendencies. In school, many said that Radar was lacking a sense of humor. He graduated from Wichita Heights High School in 1963. In 1965 he entered Kansas Wesleyan College in Salina. During that time Radar started breaking and entering into home, stealing and getting away with it.
From 1966 to 1970 he served in the US Air Force. He was stationed in Okinawa for six months and in 1968 was then stationed at the Tachikawa Air Base near Tokyo. Radar has stated that in later years he was also stationed in Korea, Greece, and Turkey. It was in those years that he started having sexual relations with local prostitutes and stalking others in the community. In a journal, he wrote how he was able to successfully break into a base library and steal a book without getting caught. Although privately he was starting to become involved in criminal acts, to the public he was receiving awards for good conduct and ribbons in the National Defense area.
On May 22, 1971, Dennis Radar and Paula Dietz were married. They soon settled in Park City, not far from their old hometown in north Wichita. They would eventually go on to have two children. While Radar was working with Cessna, a small aircraft manufacturer, he started attending the Butler Count Community College in El Dorado. In 1973 he earned his Associate's degree in electronics. By the end of the same year, he began studying at Wichita State University to earn his degree. He was a poor student and could not spell very well, leading others to believe that he had a learning disability because of his bad grammar.
In late 1973 during the oil embargo crisis, his job at Cessna was quickly plummeting leaving him unhappy and unemployed. This caused his violent fantasies to grow more vivid, leaving him with the question: what would it be like to kill someone?
